都市郊外に広がる風景を見る度に、私は懐かしさと同時に、喪失感を感じる。郊外はかつて、現代のニューフロンティアとして、新しいライフデザインを生み出す夢の島だった。今では古典的になりつつある多くの古い写真集に、郊外の新しい生活、新しい文化、そして新しい世界の広がりが記載されている。しかしながら幼い頃から、郊外で暮らし育って来た私にとって、郊外は何事もない日常であり、同時にありきたりな故郷なのだ。
今日、どこの郊外にも画一的な風景が広がっている。私は郊外を撮り歩く度に、私自身の故郷や出身地に関する、アイデンティティーの喪失を深く感じる。それは伝統や格式に依らない、郊外の文化や風習の希薄さが目に付くだけでなく、郊外の風景がスクラップ・アンド・ビルドされる度に、私の土地の記憶が薄れ、塗り替えられていくからである。
私は現代に於いて、郊外という存在は時代のエッジに立っていると考えている。それは価値観の多様性、社会の共存・世代を超えて連帯すること（隣人の顔が見える世界であること）、そして他者への共感とまなざしを持って世界を想像すること＝つまり人間性そのものという世界観を、社会全体が失いつつあると考えるからである。私は無機質で画一的な郊外の風景に、それらの現代的な世界観が鋭く写し出されていると考える。郊外は毎日、顔の見えない骨格標本の様な景色を私達の前に曝け出している。私はそこに現代の縮図を見ている。
Every time I looking at the spreading suburbs, I feel nostalgia as well as sense of lost. Once, when the suburbs were called “New - Frontier” area, suburbs mean “the dream island” where new life design was born. Today many old photoalbums, which are now becoming classics, describe the new life, new culture, and new world at the suburbs. I have lived and grown up in the suburbs since my childhood. The suburbs mean daily life, as well as mundane hometown at me.
Now, uniform scenery is spreading in many suburbs. Every time I walk around to taking photographs at the suburbs, I feel a lost feeling of identity regarding my own hometown and place of origin. This is not only because I see a lack of culture and customs in the suburbs where do not depend on tradition and formalities. More than that, because every time the suburban landscape is scrapped and built, the landscape in my memory is faded and repainted.
I believe that suburbs are meaning edge of our time. Because I think that our society as a whole is losing diversity of worth, social coexistence and solidarity across generations. And I think our society missing imagination of the world with empathy and looking for other people, in other words like humanity. I consider that the inorganic and uniform suburban landscape is a sharp reflection of this modern worldview. Every day, the suburbs expose to us a landscape like a skeletal specimen without a face. I am seeing in them a microcosm of the world.
